Starting a business on Hawaii Island: Successful Business Model #1

Aloha!

A key to starting a successful business on Hawaii Island is to select the right business model.

Buy low, sell high. That is a business model.

But not quite what we need.

Playing a game which matters. That is a business model.

But not quite what we need.

I am going to share with you in a series of posts business models I have seen work successfully on Hawaii Island.

Imitate success.

#1 Business Model: Ag Estate

Hawaii Island, unlike other islands in Hawaii has lots of farm acreage available at reasonably affordable prices.

An ag estate business model has five components:

1) Ag land

2) House

3) Specialty crop

4) Value added processing

5) Direct sales component

An example.

1) You buy a 5 acre ag lot in Puna.

2) You build a house on the ag lot (place to live).

3) You decide to grow coffee trees which are proven to grow well on your type of ag lot.

4) You set-up a boutique roast to order processing facility

5) You sell your specialty coffee via online marketing

There are MANY different specialty crops that can fit this ag estate business model on Hawaii Island.
